Laser Engraving Settings Guide – Power, Speed & Frequency Charts for Fiber Lasers
This laser settings guide provides practical parameter references for fiber laser engraving, including power, speed, frequency, and pulse width adjustments for different materials such as stainless steel, wood, slate, brass, and aluminum.
It helps users optimize engraving quality, contrast, depth, and consistency based on real-world fiber laser machine performance.
How Laser Settings Work
Laser engraving quality is determined by four main parameters:
- Power: Controls engraving depth and intensity
- Speed: Affects darkness and exposure time
- Frequency: Impacts smoothness and contrast (especially on metals)
- Pulse Width: Controls energy distribution and marking behavior
These parameters must be balanced depending on material type and desired engraving result.
General Optimization Rules
- Higher power = deeper engraving
- Higher speed = lighter marking
- Higher frequency = smoother results on metals
- Lower frequency = more aggressive engraving effect
- Proper balance between speed and power is essential for stable results

Prep the glass with prang black paint form the dollar store. I used an airbrush to spray it on. I tried to get it as dark as I could. Also I was 7mm down from my height measurement, ie … if it was 200mm I lower the lens out of focus for 7mm.

Laser Settings for Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is commonly used for high-contrast black marking and deep engraving.
Typical results require careful adjustment of frequency and pulse width.
- High contrast black marking settings
- Annealing color marking settings
- Deep engraving settings
Stainless steel engraving performance depends heavily on correct frequency tuning and laser stability.
Laser Settings for Wood
Wood engraving requires controlled energy output to avoid burning or excessive charring.
- Lower power recommended for clean edges
- Higher speed reduces burn marks
- Moderate frequency for smoother gradients
Wood engraving results vary depending on wood density and surface coating.
Laser Settings for Slate & Stone
Slate engraving relies on surface contrast rather than depth.
- High contrast image settings recommended
- Medium power with controlled speed
- Minimal over-burning for clean grayscale results
Slate is ideal for photo engraving applications.
Laser Settings for Metals (Brass, Aluminum, Titanium)
Different metals require specific tuning to avoid reflection and ensure marking stability.
- Brass: moderate power with controlled frequency
- Aluminum: lower frequency for better marking contrast
- Titanium: optimized settings for color marking effects (MOPA lasers)
Metal behavior varies depending on alloy composition.
Laser Marking vs Deep Engraving
- Marking: Fast, surface-level engraving for logos and text
- Deep engraving: Multiple passes for depth and durability
- Photo engraving: Requires grayscale image optimization and fine tuning
Each method requires different parameter balancing.
Summary
This page serves as a structured fiber laser engraving settings reference, helping users understand how to adjust laser parameters for different materials and applications, including marking, engraving, and photo reproduction.
It is designed for both beginners and advanced users to improve engraving quality and consistency.
Before You Start
Laser settings alone cannot guarantee stable results. Machine quality and system configuration play a major role in engraving performance.
